Either way, those who delve into why we suffer are looking into something that is actually beyond human comprehension. Some are well meaning, like Greg (BD Wong), while others are self-deluded, like Gary (Tom Hollander). There are those who try to look into the problem of evil and suffering-those who search for answers and understanding.
The problem is so inexorable, it’s impossible to ignore. We are our own worst enemy, even when we are relatively innocent. Both Boy and Girl represent the totality of the helpless human race and our situation in which the evil around us renders us powerless and vulnerable. With evil left unchecked, we do irreparable harm to ourselves as a human race. Those around them are profoundly affected by it. The two children in the film, Boy and Girl, are born into a world indelibly marked by evil and suffering. It causes us to do terrible things-not just to others, but to ourselves. As the mass-suicide epidemic takes hold around the main character, Malorie (Sandra Bullock), so we are all affected by evil, because we are all human. Like the epidemic that breaks out suddenly at the beginning of the movie, evil and suffering might seem distant from us-someone else’s problem that we see on TV. But here’s my take on it.īird Box is actually about the problem of evil and suffering. I could be wrong on this, and I’m willing to admit that I’m coming at this with my personal subjective Christian lens. When I got to the final scene of the movie, where the tension was resolved, I thought to myself, “This whole film has been an allegory.” That is, the surface-level story was symbolic of a deeper meaning. It’s a tense apocalyptic survival thriller, and I was engrossed. I recently watched the movie, Bird Box, directed by Susanne Bier and starring Sandra Bullock.

It creates a post-apocalyptic energy that shows like The Walking Dead, The Last of Us and most recently, Apple TV+'s Silo, had.SPOILER ALERT: This post contains spoilers about the movie Bird Box, and some statements might not make a lot of sense unless you’ve seen the movie. Clearly, Claire is questioning the morals and ethics abound at the castle. It adds unnecessary layers to a plot that never explains anything, coughing up another excuse for humanity to engage in a civil war. This way, the humanity versus beast sci-fi arc feels off-kilter, and gives the impression Bird Box Barcelona doesn't know if it does want to be a horror. But the film shouldn't be chucking in random questions, theories and curveballs, which kill off the mystery and skew audiences' imaginations. Sure, leaving this up to the viewer to interpret isn't a bad idea.
The film dances between aliens, angels or something more, complicating things a bit. However, it does feel convoluted when Octavio tries to paint the creatures as quantum beings, who take form based on the person witnessing them. In this case, Sebastián is broken after witnessing the death of his loved ones. It plays on faith and religion with Sebastián, nodding to how a cult formed in Bird Box and tried to make people "see" the beings.
