Some objects require you to do more than just click you can pull on switches, for example, or turn cranks by clicking and performing the appropriate mouse movement. Moving your mouse around the sides of the screen will reveal arrows you can click to move to other locations, and your cursor will change if you pass it over a spot or creature you can interact with.
